| Thanks
to Dave for this report.
At last Dave could stay on his new bike for more than 23mins
a week, it was
25 time.
Sunny, dry but windy, favourable tail wind upto the turn at
the top of
Cunscough Lane.
The Leach family were upto their usual antics, ie Kieran going
off behind
his dad, the plan being Leach senior could try to dig in a
bit as Kieran
goes passed, so gaining a few vital seconds. Not so important
in a 25 but
more so in a 10.
Settling into the ride, and doing the bypass twice the miles
soon tick over.
The Phoenix were well represented with marshalls, with encouragement
being
shouted from every vantage point, (which is appreciated).
A misleading time check given to Dave, advised he was 30 secs
upon Kieran at
about 18 miles.
Dave ignored this as he made the gap at about 5 secs.
The leg upto the church is always a grovel and both Dave and
Kieran felt it
in the legs. A quick recovery and it is all out to the finish.
Again very close, 2 secs separating old and young.
So close in fact, we are bringing in photo finish equipment
for the rest of the season.
(On second thoughts, it wouldn't be much use on a time trial...
doh!! )

George felt the pain tonight during his first 25 mile event
tonight for 7 years.
With grim determination he battled on, struggling to gain
speed against the wind, "which seemed to be coming
from all directions",he said after the race.
Nevertheless he 'dug in' and finished in style and .....knackered.
Well done George.
A good turn out of riders from the Phoenix C.C. IBM Group
LTD, including Dave, Kieran, John, Andy, Bernie and Sam,
all enjoying the reasonable weather. Although not sunny
and a little cool with a slight wind, not many complained.
Dave, still on top form finished only 1 second slower than
his previous 25 and was second overall from the 21 entrants.
From my different photo points around the course I could
see various gaps closing, but surprisingly, that John was
still ahead of Kieran by about one minute after 22 miles.
John was having a good ride.
At the same distance Andy was onto George's wheel, but against
the wind and the drag to the Church just ahead, he was struggling
to gain any more time and finished just one minute ahead
of George. Well done Andy (first 25 ?)

The last evening 25 of the year and Kieran was determined
to better his June time of 1:00 55. The conditions were
far from perfect and included wind, rain and me hanging
out of the rear window of Keith Linge's car taking photos!!!
The four Phoenix riders were:- Bernie,John,Kieran and Dave.
Starting in the order 6,7,8 and 9, made spotting the time
differences much easier during the race from my 'roving'
(stalking) locations from around the circuit.
Everybody going well down the Lane but would soon have the
extra effort of heading into the wind as they turned onto
the by-pass.
From my 'hanging out of the window' position I enjoyed a
conversation with Kieran as he battled the wind towards
the Motorway Island. It went something like this:-- "Come
on Kieran, yer doin well," reply from Kieran, "
I've been stung by a bee". He didn't say on what part
of his body he had been stung or how he knew it was a bee,
but I don't suppose that matters when you're gasping for
air and trying to maintain a steady 25 mph..
As the race progressed the Phoenix riders gradually changed
the order of start with Dave the first to finish with a
winning time of 1:00:51, Kieran 1:02 :40, John 1:04:16 and
Bernie 1:08:50.
Kieran's excellent time of 1:02 40 is probably not a true
reflection of his effort due to the close encounter with
the bee species.
Just one photo this week, quite an interesting shot of Kieran
BBS (Before Bee Sting)
(Thanks to Keith Linge for the use of his
camera and for driving me around the course.)
