
90 members and friends attended the 85th
Anniversary Dinner and Prize Presentation Of the Phoenix C.C. (Aintree) at
the Huyton Suites, Huyton on Saturday 27th November 2004.
Guest speaker on the evening was Brian Rourke, famous for building and supplying
bicycles to such stars as Nicole Cooke. A champion in his own right he was
accompanied by his partner Judith. Also present were Joan and John Kershaw,
Joan being former Merseyside Ladies Champion 16 times and on the National
committee for the Cycling Time Trials. Liz and Jane Kavanagh attended who
are descendants of J.J. Kavanagh the founder of The Phoenix C.C. (Aintree)
in 1919.
Winners for the season at varying distances and events were Dave Massen, Kieran
Leach, Arthur Winstanley, Dave Walker, Steve Jones, Steve McBride, John Hampson
and John Leach.
The Phoenix also won Team prizes for the East Liverpool Wheelers 50, Phoenix
C.C. (Aintree) 25 and the Merseyside Wheelers Tour of the Lancashire Lanes.
Arthur Winstanley (aka Alan Street), one of our new members, entertained the
audience with a vocal and comic set that went down well, a bit like Arthur
who also won the prestigious “Golden Stabiliser Award”
