Fortunately the traffic cones near the Rainford Island had
been moved by the Council workers on Friday to allow the race to take place.
Fine, dry and warm with a slight breeze against the riders for the long section
from the Motorway island to the Rainford island.
Quite soon into the race number 5, P Batson (Preston Wheelers) was going well
and was looking like he could be one of the top three riders. There were a
number of riders pushing hard and going for the hour or shorter but it was
difficult to notice the slightly faster speeds between these riders until
their finishing times were recorded.
Later on in the field a couple of riders were really going for gold, but even
at the pace they were travelling it was clear that the eventual winner, J
Stewart (Le Coq Sportif) was noticeably faster that the Second placed rider
P. Ware. Peter put in an excellent ride finishing with 58:10, which could
easily have won on another day.
J. Stewart's time of 56:13 was more than enough to claim his winner's prize.
In the Ladies section, due to injury, K. Dwyer (St. Helens C.R.T.) was a DNS
and Linda Tully (Kirkby C.C.) battled hard against her own personal best and
took the honours for the ladies section. Well done LInda.
