The new headquarters at Rainford North End Recreation Ground
provided an excellent base for the Phoenix C.C. Open 10. The weather was perfect,
almost dead calm, very warm and pleasant.
The riders were on their way and soon came to the Rainford bypass and headed
for the Motorway Island. By the time they reached my vantage point on the
Wheatsheaf Island, probably the fastest point on the circuit the traffic seem
unusually heavy and many riders had a congested roundabout to negotiate. It
was only later I discovered that the M6 was closed at the M58 junction and
cars were returning and using the bypass to reach the East Lancashire road
for the alternate M6 junction.
A couple of the early starters were looking extra fast, Number 10, P.McAllister
from Seamons C.C. was followed soon after by Number 15, John Leach from the
Phoenix C.C. moving deceptively fast and being fortunate to have a clear run
through the Island. The eventual winner, D.Shand from the West Pennine Road
Club came hurtling past, noticeable quicker and looking very determined.
Back at base the results were arriving: the riders, now seeing their times
were very happy and many were PB's.
Please see the result sheet(s) in the photo album for the full list of riders
and times. The official results will appear here later.
