The first ten of the season and once again well attended by riders Arthur, Kieran, Keith, John, Steve, Sam and John W. and cheerleaders Dave, George and Threllie.

Strangely, it was quite wet at the start but the bypass stayed dry, it was one of those damp dull overcast calmish evenings. Ok for the men with early season legs.... like Arthur, he wellied it around the course and left everybody in his wake with a time of 23:23.
So fast he even won on handicap by 19seconds.
There were a couple of noticeable absentees from the field, Dave Massen (now chief cheerleader) and Terry Phillips.
Dave almost had a go tonight but was short of a few training miles. Although he offered to get some miles in before the race he would have had difficulty completing his 1600 miles of winter training runs in just half an hour.
Work first, racing second, Terry missed a good night and would have done very well in these conditions. Hopefully see you next week.

Thanks to Keith for taking the photos in what was very poor lighting for action shots. Although the light was bad there is something extra and exciting in the shots.

2nd ten and the same night as the Champions League Semi final between Liverpool and Chelsea (Liverpool won 4-1 on penalties).
Much quieter on the roads .
5 riders tonight - Steve, Kieran, John Leach, Terry and Keith.
The wind was bending the trees tonight from the East, making the circuit difficult to ride to get the best out of it (except for S. Stewart who finished in 20:55). No one direction was very fast but, most unusually we did gain some time going back up the lane. It's normally a grovel over the last mile to the finish.
Big gains for Kieran and Keith, others went back a bit. Terry's first ten in the series and he came second(see below)
Quick results:- Kieran 24:23, Terry 24:44, Keith 24:46, John 25:13, Steve 26:40
Mr. Massen not wanting to miss the photo call, turned up astride his finest stead and posed as he slowly rode passed the photographer (Keith).

Sorry, no photos tonight due to the very dull conditions

24 riders tonight with 6 from the Phoenix on a windy, dry and cool evening.
Arthur and Andy could still be finishing off Day 4 on their big adventure from Lands End to John 'O' Groats. Details on the News and Chat Page.
Kieran and Keith back from their week's break with no cycling. Terry back from somewhere and going even faster, nearly a minute quicker than his time from the 2nd May. Kieran 's week off seemingly having no effect and came second after contesting his time with 24:29.

Not a bad night, wind easing in time for the start, which helped the Phoenix 5 to go even faster than last week. High speed down to the by-pass then a bit of a struggle but definitely not a grovel up to the motorway island. After that it's downhill to the Wheatsheaf with a helping wind, but again not directly. Dodging the traffic at the Wheatsheaf Island and then head for the Rainford Island, still spinning the pedals, fast but not totally ballistic. The very slight wind was still helping and it was rewarding us with some reasonably high speeds.

The island is here and so are the Phoenix Marshals to give us a cheer and some encouragement. Lower gear now as we round the island and hit the wind almost head on, but surprisingly not dropping too much speed. Keeping the pressure on it gets a shade harder just before the slight downhill section then picks up again and a good result is on the cards.
Into the lane and still up to speed but it does get a bit tougher as the approaching junction with Ben Lane gets nearer. A few more bends and the clock is ticking, ticking and with a final anaerobic surge of effort the finish line flashes past (well..it does relative to the rider).

Cooling down on the way back to the clubrooms for a welcome brew and to discuss the night's results (and also listen to the excuses).

Sunny and dry, what a contrast to yesterday, the wettest June day on record.
A bit of a north westerly, back to the normal direction, flat out from the motorway island with a great following wind and then hit the wall on the turn at the Rainford island, accustomed as we are it never gets any easier.
Well, that said, we still have Arthur who seems to make it look easy regardless of the weather conditions, tonight he again produced a memorable performance with his time of 23:23, third on the night and another 20 points in the bag for the 10's series. Terry second, only 19 seconds away. What more can he do to catch Arthur? Tune in again for the next thrilling installment of the Arthur - Terry series, coming soon to this site.
